Depreciation Lands Surveys

Depreciation Lands Survey Project Under Way

The Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commision has painstakingly posted thousands upon thousands of original land surveys for the state of Pennsylvania at the PA Land Archives website. There are a number of indexes to the surveys, and as you begin to look for the surveys for any one place, you immediately find that the information is scattered all over the place and is much like a needle in a haystack. We have begun organizing the surveys into a table so that you can easily view the surveys for Cranberry Township. The surveys in Alexander and Nicholson's parts of District 3, which equates to roughly 85-90% of the township, are linked through the table. We will eventually update this page to tell the Depreciation Lands story. Go to the survey table.

The lots surveyed and returned by Ephraim Douglass do not appear on the Depreciation Land Register because no sales were made of the tracts he surveyed in District 3 under the Depreciation Land program. It was not until after the lands were opened to general settlement in 1792 that the lands within his survey were sold. Thus the eastern 10-15% of the township is going to take some work to find.
